Abnormal connections between cerebral arteries and veins.
Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are direct shunts between dysplastic cerebral arteries and veins, in which a nidus of abnormal vessels, with thin and fragile walls, is interposed with no parenchyma inside it. They are considered to be congenital in origin, and may change their hemodynamic behavior throughout the patient's life.
They can be located in any part of the central nervous system, being most common in the cerebral hemispheres and, in decreasing order, the cerebellum, cerebral nuclei, brainstem, and spinal cord. The morphology is quite variable, from a few millimeters to more than six centimeters.
They are rare — about 0.1% of the population, one tenth of the incidence of cerebral aneurysms. Approximately 90% are found in the supratentorial region and about 15% remain asymptomatic throughout life. They have no gender preference.
